Metaphor: A figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.
We began talking about metaphors with a poem by Sylvia Plath. Plath was an American poet, novelist and short story writer. "Metaphors", written in 1959, contains a series of metaphors, which constitute "a riddle in nine syllables". Each line consists of nine syllables and the answer to the riddle is a word of nine letters.
Can you solve it?
Metaphors
I’m a riddle in nine syllables, An elephant, a ponderous house, A melon strolling on two tendrils. O red fruit, ivory, fine timbers! This loaf’s big with its yeasty rising. Money’s new-minted in this fat purse. I’m a means, a stage, a cow in calf. I’ve eaten a bag of green apples, Boarded the train there’s no getting off.

Did you know? Plath suffered from depression and committed suicide at the age of thirty.
